A grant is an allowance of money given to a particular organization, individual, facility, or business in order to ensure that that group or person continues to do the work the grantmaker sees as valuable. The grant money is not just given away at random, though.

Those organizations, individuals, or facilities that are in need of funding have to apply for the grant money by crafting grant proposals. Grant proposals are written statements sent to grantmakers about why the organization or individual is requesting money, what he intends to do with the funding, and reasons why they should receive the grant. Grantmakers are those charitable groups, individuals, corporations, or government agencies that give away the grant money. In order for these grant proposals to be successful they must be clear, concise, statements that convey the exact need for funding and why that funding cannot be achieved through more traditional means.

Additionally, there is always a set of guidelines, set by the grantmaker, that must be followed strictly in order to get your proposal looked at seriously by those who make the final decisions regarding the awarding of grant money.
